Hugh Jackman recently spoke with MTV and shed some light on his ideas about how the next Wolverine film should be rated. Clearly, most comic book fans would LOVE to see an R-rated Wolverine film as he truly is one of the more violent characters in the Marvel Universe.
“There’s such great temptation to make an R rated Wolverine.” says Jackman. “I’ve always felt that and I know a lot of fans would like that and I totally get it. If there is ever a superhero that’s going to be R rated, it’s Wolverine. However in the last 10 years I’ve also met many 12, 13, 14, 15 year olds who for them Wolverine is not just cool you see it in their eyes, he’s everything to them.”
“My thing to [director] James Mangold, we were like ‘lets not put it off the table.’” Jackman continues. “There’s even talk about us doing 2 versions as in finding a way to do both while you shoot it, which could be really cool. But you need to have a really good reason to exclude those [younger] fans.”
Unfortunately, we all know that the movie studio would never let an R-rating take the place of a more family-friendly rating when it comes to box office results. It would be great to see both a PG and R-rated ‘director’s cut’ of some sort.
Directed by James Mangold, The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, is expected to arrive in theaters in 2012.
