Marvel Studios has confirmed what we’ve all be talking about and hoping for these past few weeks; there is indeed a Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the works!
Not only does this project mean Marvel is launching another ensemble film, but the decision to make Guardians of the Galaxy signals a strong statement from the studio; we are ready to put Marvel in space. So many of their original comic book shorelines are set against the backdrop of space and, aside from the brief inclusions in Thor and The Avengers, most of the super-battles have been restricted to Earth. Not anymore.
While holding their panel at SDCC, Marvel also released the first piece of concept art for the film, a movie that would include the likes of Drax the Destroyer, Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Nova just to name a few.
Originally created and published in the late 1960s, the team was eventually given a new character roster and essentially rebooted in the 1990s. Kevin Feige has stated that the movie would be based on the revamped version of the superhero team. A Guardians of the Galaxy movie could be used to introduce and tease a wide array of Cosmic foes and allies from the Marvel Universe and could certainly be used to help bring the character of Thanos, teased in a post-credit scene in The Avengers, into a more powerful role in the proposed Avengers sequel. With no director currently attached and a script currently being written by Nicole Perlman, Marvel/Disney hopes to have the film in theaters on August 1, 2014.
