Todd McFarlane’s original cover artwork for 1990′s The Amazing Spider-Man #328 has just sold at auction for a record-breaking price at more than $657,000. Released in January 1990, the artwork graced the cover of McFarlane’s last issue in his long run of The Amazing Spider-Man and features Spider-Man launching an extreme uppercut to the Hulk’s midsection. This was the last Spider-Man cover that McFarlane illustrated before his Spider-Man title launched in August 1990.
The auction was one of the many listings that are currently a part of the Shamus Collection of Modern Masterworks, a collection that has been nurtured by Martin Shamus, a Long Island comic book store owner who happens to be the father of Wizard Magazine’s founder. Comprised of numerous pieces of original comic book art from the late 1980s and early 1990s, the collection could quite possible fetch $9 million when all is sold, according to Heritage Auctions vice president Todd Hignite.
