A sad day for nostalgic gamers; Nintendo has confirmed that they will be shutting down the iconic Nintendo Power magazine by the end of the year. “Nintendo can confirm that Future US will end the production of Nintendo Power magazine with the last issue slated for December 2012,” Nintendo said in a statement. According to the source of the initial reports, Nintendo was no longer interested in having Future Publishing, the group who publishes the gaming mag, renew their contract while continuing to express no interest in taking direct control of the magazine themselves or perusing possible digital initiatives for the title. Future Publishing is also responsible for publishing various official publications for Playstation and Xbox.
The majority of staff writers and editors were reportedly told about the impending shutdown early last week and have apparently already been reassigned to other projects within the company. Founded in 1988, Nintendo Power was a staple publication in the earlier days of console gaming, helping to better inform gamers about world of Nintendo products for more than 23 years. With this sad predicament for nostalgic gamers worldwide, Nintendo Power is now on track to release its final issue in December and will bow out as America’s longest running gaming-related magazine.
