Robert Downey Jr. Set Injury Forces ‘Iron Man 3′ Production To Halt

Production was temporarily shut down earlier today for Iron Man 3 after leading actor Robert Downey Jr. was apparently injured on the set. According to reports, the actor appeared to have sustained an ankle injury while performing a stunt on the set, although the severity of the injury remains unclear.

Marvel Studios has since released the following official statement on the incident.

“Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.”

Based on Marvel’s choice words of “short delay”, it appears that Downey’s injuries may have been relatively minor and that he’s expected to make a speedy recovery. Iron Man 3 has been filming scenes in North Carolina since June and and, while neither Marvel Studios or Disney have mentioned when the production may pick up again, there’s no indication that the delay will affect the release date of May 3rd, 2013.

Directed by Shane Black, Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Ashley Hamilton, Guy Pearce and James Badge Dale.
