Netherlands Paint the Road with Bioluminescent Safety Markers

A newly introduced idea has won the Best Future Concept at the Dutch Designer Awards and has already begin implementation in the Netherlands, instituting glow in the dark paint markers and weather indicators that will be installed on highways in the Netherlands beginning in mid 2013. The futuristic roadway system has been developed by Studio Rooosegaarde and presents drivers with a bio-luminescent paint that charges in the sunlight and provides them a safe road light that allows for a safer roadway during nighttime travel. “It’s like the glow in the dark paint you and I had when we were children,” designer Daan Roosegaarde stated, “but we teamed up with a paint manufacturer and pushed the development.”

The bio-luminescent application provokes a more cost efficient method for providing safety features for drives and includes weather indicators such as snowflakes on the road as well as potentially slippery conditions.

The lead designer behind the project hopes that the proposed bio-luminescent safety feature will reach Europe, Asia and eventually the United States.
