Did Entertainment Weekly just spoil the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in Star Trek Into Darkness? Fans on CBM were quick to notice a small blurb that was published on the magazine’s website, clearly stating that the secret identity of Cumberbatch’s villainous character is indeed Khan.
Since first beginning their press rounds, both the cast and crew of the film, particularly J.J. Abrams, have been adamant that Cumberbatch is NOT playing the iconic character first introduced in the original Star Trek TV show. Abrams is well known for his love of secrecy when it comes to plot elements and general statements about his productions (ie, “I am not directing Star Wars“), so it’s more than likely that Khan may indeed have been the secret villain all along. On the other hand, there’s also the chance that a writer at EW simply made an error and mistakenly put Khan’s name in place of “John Harrison,” the actual billed name for Cumberbatch’s character.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
We suppose only time will tell.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Trek into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Peter Weller, Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch and will arrive in theaters on May 17, 2013.
